The Port of Antwerp awards green technology pioneers

Sabrina Peters

Less emissions is gaining more importance at the Port of Antwerp. The port and the city suffer from high concentrations air pollutions such as particulates and therefore seeks to attract vessels that make use of innovative, sustainable technologies. Seagoing vessels using an alternative technology to reduce emissions of particulates will grant a discount as of the 1st of June 2015. The discount comes on top of the existing ESI discount. In some cases this means a 30% reduction in the port dues. These dues need to be paid whenever you call at Antwerp. By awarding green technology pioneers the Port of Antwerp encourages investments in sustainable shipping.

What does this mean for you?

As of the 1st of June vessels can claim the discount if they are able to demonstrate that they either make effective use of scrubbers or powered by LNG for a period of at least 24 hours before they call at the port of Antwerp. A 20% discount will be given if a ship is powered by LNG. In case you use closed scrubbers you get a discount of 15%. ‘Early adapters’ will be rewarded in this case since the discount percentages will be gradually reduced as of 2016. The percentages for 2016 are set at 15% and 10% respectively, and for 2017 they will be 10% and 5%.

We noticed that environmental responsibility is gaining more importance. In line with the changing legalization and regulations Lagersmit designed zero-emission sealing solutions. Seals will not contribute directly in obtaining a cleaner air but they can retrieve less emissions of oil into the marine environment. The Supreme Ventus® and the Supreme Athmos® are designed to deliver your peace of mind by guarantying a zero-emission of oil. Their air and drain system prevents oil leakage to the environment or water leakage into the stern tube.
