Types of seals

In general, there are two different types of seals:

  • Static seals, these do not move in relation to each other
  • Dynamic seals, these move past each other

At Lagersmit, we are specialised in dynamic (radial) seals for rotating shafts within ships, pumps and tidal turbines. The two most important functions of our shaft seals are:

  • Prevent water, dirt and dust from entering the installation
  • Prevent fluids (usually oil or grease) from leaking out of the installation and ending up in the environment

The seals usually consist of a forward seal and aft seal with rubber (FKM or NBR) lip seals, liner, springs, gaskets and housing parts. Our seals are among other things used on stern tubes, thrusters, dredging pumps, cooling water pumps, locks and pumping stations. We developed 2 different product types for these applications, the Supreme® propulsion seal and the Liquidyne® pump shaft seal. For special applications (such as tidal turbines) our engineers are more than happy to develop a custom-made sealing solution!

Supreme® propulsion seals

We believe a seal should deliver top performance, keep you going and offer you Peace of Mind. Our Supreme seals offer a ‘plus’ to many propulsion systems and vessels worldwide.

The Supreme stern tube and thruster seals are produced in our high-tech production location in Alblasserdam, The Netherlands. It's important that all parts are perfectly attuned to each other, that why all housing parts, lip seals and liners are of the highest quality. Our Modular, Made-to-Measure philosophy enables us to deliver customer-specific designs combined with short quotation, lead and delivery times.

The Supreme propulsion seals have been approved by globally recognised classification societies such as the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Bureau Veritas (BV), DNV GL and the Indian Register of Shipping.

Liquidyne® pump shaft seals

The Liquidyne pump shaft seals are the alternative to gland packing and mechanical seals. The Liquidyne has a predictable lifetime due to the condition monitoring function. In addition, the pump shaft seal is also environmentally friendly thanks to the water-lubricated system that saves energy through reduced friction on the shaft.

Advantages:

  • Predictable lifetime
  • Energy savings
  • Safe workplace
  • Easy to maintain

Released in 1983, the water-lubricated Liquidyne pump shaft seal was initially intended for heavy-duty dredge pumps. Thanks to its robust design, the seal can handle above-average axial and radial play. It is suitable for pumps that have to deal with severe shocks and vibrations, incorrect alignment and abrasive media. The Liquidyne increases the pump’s lifetime and leads to a longer mean time between maintenance (MTBM) thanks to its robustness. Condition monitoring adds predictability and makes your operation more secure.
