WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF A SEAL?

Seals are used to prevent the leakage of fluids in rotating equipment. A seal prevents lubricants, such as oil and grease, from entering the environment and (dirty) water from entering the installation.

TYPES OF SEALS

In general, there are two different types of seals:

  • Static seals, these do not move in relation to each other
  • Dynamic seals, these move past each other

At Lagersmit, we are specialised in dynamic (radial) seals for rotating shafts within ships, pumps and tidal turbines. The two most important functions of our shaft seals are:

  • Prevent water, dirt and dust from entering the installation
  • Prevent fluids (usually oil or grease) from leaking out of the installation and ending up in the environment
